In all Steve's drawings and paintings, he illuminates a world that combines classical and traditional concepts of space and rhythm, of proportion and measurement. Figurative concepts based in classical and Renaissance ideas of human centeredness, as both homage to and an exploration of the self-centered and self-absorbed nature of these systems of thought. Elements hinting at industrial society and modern consumer culture create contrast between the high and elegant rnideology of humanist classical culture and like-minded Renaissance thought and the absolute superficiality of the modern world. Drawing signifiers from early mythological sources, Steve exposes the lack of deep history and myth found in the meaningless babble and infinitely repetitive derivative mediocrity in modern visual culture. In a world in which we are almost over-exposed to images, Steve see a single cluster of symbols so painstakingly represented as sarcastic and ironic. Inseparable is his ideology from the method, technique, and process he uses to bring them from idea to reality.
