Subjectivity vs objectivity

Postby Thee.P.Fitz » Fri Jan 18, 2008 7:12 am

Anyone care to discuss?

subjective: (websters 3 b: ) characteristic of or belonging to reality as perceived rather than as independent of mind --- compare OBJECTIVE

objective: ( websters 1 b::) having reality independent of the mind --- compare SUBJECTIVE

Image

In this image there is a lightning bolt. Objectively.
There is also a crack in the cement which is shaped like the lightning bolt. Objectively.

Subjectively, I know the two are not equal --- one is a flash of electrons and the other is a pattern where the cement has a crack.

Furthermore, it is just a painting on a computer screen. Objectively.

But subjectively this image affects the viewer as if through an unseen ether.

All opinions are subjective, but the source of opinions can be objective?

That is the question then. :juggling:

I think there is something like "objective subjectivity" and "subjective objectivity". Blends of the two.

One day, looking at the sidewalk, I noticed that the cracks in the sidewalk looked like lightning. Also, like branches of a tree.
A while back, during monsoon season, we had a hell of a lightning show. It lasted for an hour or so. And I just studied the lightning. There was hardly any thunder.

So being scientifically minded, I pieced together this lightning/cracks in cement/branches of tree triplication. Although I didn't paint the tree in the above painting.

As to subjectivity and objectivity, hmm. I think that Einstein used lightning in his relativity thought experiments as a way of showing that each of us is in their own observational and temporal perspective.

And yet, how long does it take for a crack to appear in cement? Over years I would say. :plotting:

I was thinking of re-doing the painting. I think the crack is not as complex as could be.
