Exploratory painting

Postby TeddyPancake » Tue Jan 04, 2011 6:44 am

Last year I experimented with skipping the planning/sketching step that I was used to starting the creative process with, and just started putting paint down to see where it took me. Now this is all I want to do. When I sketch and plan most of the journey is already laid out before I even put any paint down. By going right to the canvas without a plan the whole painting has become a journey for me. This is hardly the most efficient approach, and I can run into layout issues as I go, but I am really enjoying working this way. I was wondering if many of you do this as well.

Peace.

I always begin with the most basic of plans, sometimes no plan at all. My plans tend to fall out of the process and I simply transcend the plans and make the painting 'agree' with itself.

I like your art though... good stuff!

Your work both before and after discovering journey is of objects in space, have you tried abstract journies?
A man with bronze hands fondles a matchbook in a dark hallway. Light filters in dimly through the windows and openings. Naked hands grope for the handle door. Walls give way. An eye to the soul is a window. A soul is a pool and deep waters are a heart.

realy great paintings realy a rich atmosphere my own experience with beginning to paint imediatly is that i tend to have to much freedom and end up with a bunch of abstract and shapless forms. when i start with paint imediatly i first draw with the paint with a very thin brush but the best results for me is a realy detailed underdrawing.

Great result on the exploratory ones, but I was just wondering - why is your planned one so simple by comparison? Perhaps the planning process you used was too short, not enough brainstorming / ideas went into it?

Also as you work, the random shapes appearing out of the brushwork stimulate your imagination. Are you using something similar (random patterns) to stimulate it during planning as well?

Great looking painting in any case :)

Hay thanks. Lockodemia, you are probably right about not spending enough time brainstorming on the planned ones, probably because I find sketching with a pencil to be the least fun part, I just want to get to painting. I agree that the rough splashes and drips have become a springboard for my recent paintings, I can just stare a while as it all drips and watch the story unfold / pick out faces. I think I need to experiment with different mediums in the planning stage to get over the stiffness I feel when just starting with a pencil. Anyway, thanks for the interest.
