Visions Gallery & ArtandDiscord -(Nu)erotic Fine Art Exhibit

Postby Visions Art Gallery » Wed Apr 29, 2009 10:10 pm

Nestled in a small community in the Metro West area outside of Boston exists a gallery that has
become known for displaying edgy works of art by up and coming artists from across the nation.
Medway, MA is not a community known for its local art scene, despite the number of arts
organizations which make their homes in surrounding towns. Located smack in the middle of
Main Street, Visions Art Gallery is preparing for an exhibit which may just put the town of
Medway on the map. Gallery owners Canman and Angela Cannistraro stated: “After years of
showcasing work that bridges the gap between Fine & Alternative Art; Visions Gallery is opening
the door to the aesthetic consciousness of the New England art scene by redefining the parameters’ of its self imposed limits. We are excited about featuring artists from all over the world who have added their own creative keys to a show that will unlock and free the perceptions of all that view it.”

The upcoming exhibit, “(Nu)erotic… or, Why Does Love Make Us All So Crazy?!” presents the
work of 40 artists from the U.S., New Zealand, Spain, Russia and Britain. Curator Theresa Wall
Duggan, of Art and Discord, developed the concept for the exhibit as a way to challenge common
ideas about eroticism that exist among artists and collectors alike. “I find that exhibits which focus
on erotic art have a tendency to be predictable and what is predictable is inevitably boring. This
really is the last thing you want when viewing something which is supposed to be titillating and
sexually expressive,” Theresa explains, “I decided that what would be most fascinating is putting
love and sexuality in the context of neurosis, which is commonly a method of dealing with
emotional distress. Many people have experienced some form of neurosis in their emotional lives.
I have found that personally, my most neurotic moments are related to sex and in dealings with the opposite sex.” Taking this idea and presenting it across the globe, there was an outpouring of
response from artists submitting their work for the exhibit. 61 final works were chosen from the
115 pieces submitted to be in the exhibition that will be hanging from May 17th through July 18th ,
2009.

The work represents a number of interpretations of the theme, and each has been crafted in a
different style. Included in the collection are traditional nude figure drawings, watercolor
illustrations with tongue-in-cheek references to the male and female anatomy, glamorous erotic
photography, embroidered portraits, abstracted paintings and photographs and sculptural pieces
displaying the intimate human anatomy with an unexpected twist.

Accepted artists include: Sarah Alexander, Laurie Aron, Sia Aryai, Christine Beetow, Michael
Berkowitz, Jean Blake White, Margaret Coleman, Richard P. Cook, Anna Comella, Trey Crim,
Canman, Ernie D’Elia, Anne Diamond McNevin, Don Dougan, Jaesun Duggan, Gail Eckberg,
Dick Fotland, Terence Healy, Moises Hergueta, Geoff Houghton, Aunia Kahn, John Kennard,
Peter Keresztury, Mark Kovalchuk, Barry Maloney, Lauren May, Richard Meyer, Doug Murray,
Fred Nocella, John O’Donnell, Michail Parlamas, Scotty P., Paul Peterson, Daniel Petrov, Fred
Pirone, Marnie Pitts, Katie Poliquin, Susan Sheridan, Peter Vogel, Phaeidra, and Joni Younkins-Herzog.

The Opening Reception for the exhibit will take place on May 17th from 1pm to 5pm at Visions
Gallery, 133 Main Street, Medway, MA. The local artists will be present and there will be
refreshments as well as entertainment in the form of belly dancing by Sabrina, of Boston.
