Martina Hoffmann and Robert Venosa Podcast Interviews

June 21st, 2008 by Leo Plaw

C-realm presents two podcast interviews with Martina Hoffmann and Robert Venosa.

Martina Hoffmann talks about the connection between the visionary states induced by ayahuasca and the visions on canvas that they leave in their wake. Other topics include honoring the divine feminine and finding a balance between living in direct connection with nature and losing ourselves in a haze of techno-mediated busy work.

Robert Venosa's interview delves into his personal history and development as a visionary artist, Ayasmina and Roberto explore the dark side and ask whether evil exists as a thing in and of itself. They also examine the question of the reality of the subject matter of visionary art.

Both Martina Hoffmann and Robert Venosa are featured in our first publication "Metamorphosis Volume 1 – Publication of 50 Surreal & Fantastic Artists".

Chet Zar – “Ugly American” – Strychnin Gallery London

June 15th, 2008 by Leo Plaw

Chet Zar at his \"Ugly American\" exhibitionFriday the 13th was upon us again, and where did I head to this night? Strychnin Gallery London to see Chet Zar's exhibition "Ugly American". Arriving early for a change I had a chance to take in all of the exhibition and meet a few people, including the artist himself. I whipped out a copy of Metamorphosis for him to sign for Jon Beinart and myself. My bag went home a little heavier as I also purchased a catalogue of Chet's artwork. There was also a hard bound limited edition, but this was a little beyond my budget for the moment.

Laurie Lipton who will also be exhibiting with Strychnin Gallery again in Berlin, also attended the opening. So it was a very social evening talking to the artists, other guests, Yasha Young (the gallery owner) and her lovely staff.

Chet Zar at his \"Ugly American\" exhibitionChet's artwork glowed, although themes were monsters. He indicated that the colour theme was different to what he usually works with. He went on to explain that he was inspired by a dream with incredibly luminescent colours.

You can see Chet's works for yourself at Strychnin Gallery London, 65 Hanbury Street, London E1 5J, UK.

Chet Zar is one of 50 Artists featured in our first publication entitled Metamorphosis.

Chet Zar was also interviewed for the beinArt news blog.

More detail about this event can be found in my personal post "Chet Zar".

Northern California Visionary Art

Northern California Visionary Art: A Contemporary Legacy
Show Dates May 10- September 7 2008

In the late 1960s the San Francisco Bay Area became the most important focal point for a new art movement. Amidst a background of Vietnam War protests, campus riots, a new Hippie idealistic counterculture, far eastern spiritual influences, underground comics, and psychedelic music and poster art, Visionary Art materialized.

A nucleus of artists developed on this wave of rising consciousness. They were influenced by Surrealism, Jungian universal archetypes, personal dream awareness, ancient art symbols, and non-Western religious philosophies. These new Visionary Artists expressed new alternate realities in their detailed dream-like images.

This exhibition germinated from the large number of Visionary artists who are now located in rural Northern California. The selection of works follows the traditions of personal dreamscape, utopian landscape, spiritual awakening, and apocalyptic visions as originally manifested in early California Visionary Art. Many of the founding visionary painters are represented, some with works that span the history of the movement. Other exhibiting artists have immigrated here from afar or are younger painters representing a second visionary generation. From the plethora of visionary art discovered in the course of organizing this exhibition, it is clear that visionary art remains an important creative force.

The seventeen artists represented in the show include: Thomas Akawie, Andrew Annenberg, Don Bear, Bonnie Bisbee, Krista Lynn Brown, Josie Grant, Mark Henson, Nick Hyde, Bil Martin, Paul Nicholson, Gene Avery North, Maire Palme, Paul Pratchenko, Janet Rayner, Mark Roland, Douglas Volz, and John Wagenet. Marvin Schenck, Grace Hudson Museum Curator, and Douglas Volz, one of the participating artists, organized the exhibition.

Laurie Lipton at Strychnin

June 1st, 2008 by Meg Woodsworth

Laurie Lipton\'s beinArt Gallery'The Sleep of Reason'

Works by Laurie Lipton, inspired by Francisco de Goya

June 20th until July 13th

Opening June 20th, 7-11pm – Meet the artist

Open Thursday – Sunday, 1pm – 6pm

Strychnin Gallery, Boxhagener Str. 36 – 10245, Berlin

“Goya saw the horrors of conflict being enacted around him on the streets where he lived. I saw the recent war in Iraq in the comfort of my own bedroom contained in a neat, recently dusted TV set. Killing and humanities' atrocities have become removed and sanitized in the 21st century. Even the bloody bombing of Guernika can be made into art that fits on to a nice coffee mug. While I sip my coffee and eat my meals I can watch incredibly terrible things happening around the world on the news, complete with computer graphics and commercial interruptions. Is this not strange?”  – Laurie Lipton

'Love Bite' (right) by Laurie Lipton was inspired by Goya's painting 'Saturn devouring his Son'
