Craola - It Wanders

August 29th, 2008 by Meg Smith

Craolas beinArt GalleryPress Release:

Greg "Craola" Simkins will be revealing his newest body of artwork entitled, It Wanders, which brings elements from the natural world into concert with the fantastic and the disturbing and is the culmination of the underlying story of heartache, loss and redemption as seen in Simkins' previous exhibitions. In this world, a boy sits in his newly demolished home, dreaming of his escape. Messenger candles from the Baron dot the land. Good fruits accompany moths and butterflies, while snowmen befriend various birds and creatures from the menagerie of Simkins' imagination. The alchemist's eggs appear as vessels containing new life spilling out of their cracked surfaces, while clouds containing the secrets of time's past fill the sky.

Part One of this amazing collection will begin as It Wanders East on September 6, 2008 at Joshua Liner Gallery in New York.  This will be Simkins' first solo exhibition on the East Coast. Part Two of the It Wanders exhibition will conclude as It Wanders West on November 6, 2008 at Gallery Nineteen Eighty Eight in Los Angeles where Simkins first began displaying his masterpieces.

Last Rites - Dark Pop

August 28th, 2008 by Meg Smith

Last Rites Gallery SitePress Release from Last Rites:

Last Rites Gallery presents… 'Dark Pop,' guest curated by Andrew Michael Ford.

September 6th through October 11th, 2008

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 6th from 7-11pm

Last Rites Gallery and guest curator Andrew Michael Ford (director of Ad Hoc Art, curator of Deep Pop) have decided to find out what several of today's brightest art stars are capable of when asked to create ONE piece of what could be considered truly 'dark art'.  Many artists find themselves in a nice groove of creating a certain mood or emotion through their work and have, understandably, become quite comfortable following this path in their art-making.  We were curious, however, what would happen if things were to get a little uncomfortable, as the artists challenged themselves to search through new or buried feelings and emotions, the kind which might find their place on the 'darker' side of the artistic spectrum.  With that in mind, Last Rites Gallery and guest curator Andrew Michael Ford proudly present "Dark Pop": A collection of truly 'dark art' from an incredibly talented and diverse group of artists who would normally never get anywhere near this stuff!  The results, we believe, are nothing short of astounding!

Participating artists include:

Ron English, Gary Taxali, Isabel Samaras, Esao Andrews, Kozyndan, Sarah Joncas, Camilla d'Errico, Lisa Alisa, Gaia, Chris Stain, D'holbachie, Jeff McMillan, Tessar Lo, Gilbert Oh, Pagan, Peripheral Media Projects, Nicole Steen, Imminent Disaster, David MacDowell, The Dirty Fabulous, Connie Wang, Jaeran Won, Ewelina Ferruso and more!

Shadow of the Silver Moon

Solo Exhibition of paintings by Jared Joslin.

August 14 - September 13, 2008

Reception: Thursday August 14 at 7-9pm

Yarger/Strauss Fine Art

354 N Bedford Drive

Beverly Hills, CA, USA

In the Shadow of the Silver Moon, a spectrum of intriguing characters spring to life. There is a Dietrich-esque emcee, striking her silver-tipped cane against the parquet floor. An alluring chanteuse beckons with her sparkling eyes and an elaborately costumed fan dancer strikes an elegant, sinuous pose. Performers and patrons are caught in the swirl of the evening, yet remain lost in their own private reveries. Under the Shadow of the Silver Moon, while the band is playing, the mysteries hidden behind the eyes linger in the air like fireflies in the night.

Visionary Art Culture Creators

August 6th, 2008 by Leo Plaw

Liminal Village - Boom FestivalBoom Festival 2008 is shaping up to be a very potent mix for Visionary arts. The epicentre for this can be found at the Liminal Village where a number of events and activities will take place.

As reported in a previous post the Vision Gallery exhibits Visionary artists from all over the world.

Robert Venosa and Martina Hoffmann are giving a presentation entitled, "Some History, Thoughts and Images on Visionary Art".

They will also be running a workshop, "Sketching the Fantastic" in which participants will be guided in exploring a simplified, exciting technique which provides a rapid entry into the magic of sketching, as well as allowing access to one's innermost, intuitive visions.  Any and all can participate. Some basic materials will be provided but participants are encouraged to bring their own to maximize their creative expression.

The Visionary Art Culture Creators Panel will explore the new world of visionary culture with a fascinating panel discussion about the place where art present meets art future. As a catalytic force in the co-creation of planetary culture, visionary art may be a key to unlocking the secrets of what is to come.

The panel will be moderated by Delvin Solkinson and feature the following speakers, Laurence Caruana, Leo Plaw, Carey Thompson, Luke Brown and Jen Zariat.

The Boom Festival runs from the 11th to the 18th of August, in Portugal.
