Invisible College

June 22nd, 2009 by Leo Plaw
The Invisible College - 5th edition

The Invisible College - 5th edition

Edition five of the Invisible College is now availible. The publication features the artwork of Amanda Sage and Leo Plaw. There is also a three page interview with Leo.

The Invisible College is a publication is dedicated to the emerging cultural forces of our times, and to anchor these cultural groups into perspective within the continuum of the twin streams of the Bohemian & Acadian memes. The magazine came into being about two and half years ago as there seemed to be a serious gap in the magazine/journal world for publications that was tracking and recording what has been evolving in the world of arts and consciousness.

The idea is to present art, poetry, tales, interviews and reviews in such a way to lift consciousness, and to engage the reader to consider alternatives to the current cultural systems that have now peaked and are now in decline. As artist and poets have been in the forefront of the various struggles and movements in society from time out of mind, journals and magazines in recent centuries have become an important part of the documenting process and have served as a focal point and organizing organ of the various aspects of what seems to be transpiring in current times.

The Invisible College evolved out of Earthrites.org and the associated Turfing blog. There was a prototype magazine being developed on Earth Rites, and Turfing is a running social and arts commentary blog. It was Robert Venosa, Martina Hoffmann or maybe Mike Crowley that suggested it should evlove into a pdf magazine. After 2 issues, it went into printing via Lulu.com. It came out rather rapidly at first, and now has slowed down a bit. We are going to keep going with the print on demand situation until we can find funding to print. The Invisible College has had some amazing artist, poets and writers grace its pages. You can go to the Invisible College web page for free downloads of the web versions and also to find a link to order a printed copy of The Invisible College.

Alex Grey – Meta Gallery

June 18th, 2009 by Delvin Solkinson
Alex Grey comes to Canada

Meta Gallery is pleased to present Anatomy of Being, new and old works by Alex Grey. In the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, as well as the first exhibition of his work in Canada in over 20 years. The works exhibited represent a wide spectrum of the inner and outer worlds Alex Grey depicts through his artworks during the years spanning 1999-2009. With a career going back over 3 decades, Alex Grey’s paintings represent a bold and courageous statement in contemporary art today. One where despite the collective struggle of humanity and the tremendous amounts of suffering occurring on a daily basis, good exists. And what Alex Grey’s artwork offers is evidence – a tangible thing we can see and touch that in its silence is a potent reminder to be good, and to love.

Alex will be attending the exhibition and also giving a talk on his art and life, Saturday June 27th, 2009.

Workshop with Venosa and Hoffmann

June 11th, 2009 by Meg Woodsworth

venosa-hoffmannPainting the Fantastic - 7-Day workshop with Martina Hoffmann and Robert Venosa.

September 2009

Rhinebeck Campus: Rhinebeck, NY (US)

Limited enrollment, register early. More information or a list of things to bring is provided after registration.

This 7-day workshop offers the rare opportunity to learn oil and portrait painting with internationally renowned visionary art masters Robert Venosa and Martina Hoffmann. Open to both beginner and accomplished artists alike, this workshop takes us on a creative adventure into expressing our personal visual language. From the initial exercises of free-form painting through to the detailed finished work, we tap into the technical expertise and creative abilities within our reach, while discovering the joy and illuminating power of visionary art.  The program includes introduction and application of the misch technique, oil painting, portrait painting, a power-point lecture on the history of visionary art, presentations by and about the instructors, and a group exhibit.

The Fantastic ‘implies a lack of restraint in the imagination’, and such is the approach to painting taken in this unique workshop. For beginners and accomplished artists alike, this workshop is for all those wishing to tap into the artistic capabilities that lie within their reach and discover the joy and illuminating power of painting. Utilizing a simplified approach, which the leaders call ‘Serendipitous Exploitation’, an emotional outpouring of color and form is first applied to a surface, followed by studied, individual detailing of the personal visions the imagination presents. Through this simple process, the artist can begin to create essential form and color that is enlivening, enlightening and amazingly fantastic. The premise: to exercise right-brain potential in a non threatening, effortless, and exuberant manner that instills joy, self discovery, and newfound self-esteem. With an emphasis on individual attention, this workshop covers the needs and desires of all involved while exceeding all expectations.

The visionary art of Robert Venosa has been exhibited worldwide and is represented in major collections. He has done film design (sketches and conceptual design for the movies Dune, Fire in the Sky, and Race for Atlantis), and his work has been featured on several CD covers, including those of Santana and Kitaro.

German-born artist Martina Hoffmann’s work has been exhibited internationally and has been published in books, calendars, and magazines such as True Visions, Noospheres, Illuminatus, The Return of the Great Goddess, Shaman’s Drum, and WellBeing. She teaches visionary painting techniques around the world with her husband Robert Venosa.

Mikel Glass at Glass Garage

June 3rd, 2009 by Meg Woodsworth

Mikel GlassPress Release from Culture Shock:

(West Hollywood, CA – April 21, 2009) – Acclaimed realist painter Mikel Glass will be featured in an exhibition entitled 'The Machine in the Garden: Hopes for a Brighter Yesterday' at the Glass Garage Fine Art Gallery in West Hollywood, opening on May 30, 2009. The exhibition will be on view through August 1.

One of Glass' contributions to the 'Machine in the Garden' exhibition is a mixed media installation entitled 'Steampunk Shelley'. The piece is comprised of a neo-Victorian portrait of Mary Shelley, author of 'Frankenstein', clutching a plastic baby doll. The painting is assembled in a frame that is tangled with mechanized moving gears, pulleys, circuits, and working steam vents powered by a valve cobbled from an antique cow milking machine. The piece uses 19th century fears of birth, stillbirth, and unplanned, uncontrolled growth as a metaphor for the 21st century dissemination of ideas through 'grassroots' and 'viral' methods that compete with frightening effectiveness against the traditional machinery available to commercial and political institutions.

The 'Machine in the Garden' exhibition will also feature performances of 'Body Mecanique', an original collaboration with the Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company and playwright Aaron Henne. The performance is a dance/spoken word/live music hybrid that explores humans' relationships with their objects and machines.

The May 30, 2009 opening of the 'Machine in the Garden' exhibition will coincide with the 12th annual West Hollywood Art and DesignWalk.

Heidi Taillefer Show – NY

June 3rd, 2009 by Meg Woodsworth

Heidi TailleferPress Release from Joshua Liner Gallery :

An Uncanny Lineup of Serendipitous Connections – May 30 to June 27, 2009

Joshua Liner Gallery is pleased to present An Uncanny Lineup of Serendipitous Connections, an exhibition of new paintings by Canadian artist Heidi Taillefer. This is Taillefer’s first solo show with the gallery.

Reflecting on life as a mixture of discovery, inevitability, and coincidence, Taillefer’s suite of twelve oil-on-canvas works presents a literalized depiction of destiny. Her dreamy paintings describe chimerical beings: humans with animal and mechanical parts, or animals with multiple limbs, wings, and utterly fantastical provenance. In each, Taillefer puts forth a coded, highly personalized origin myth—an “uncanny lineup of serendipitous connections” that for the artist shapes identity and purpose through transformation.

Birth of Venus is an updated riff on Botticelli’s iconic work. Here, “Venus” is a common tabby, newly sprung from a broken shell and bearing mechanical wings. Amid intergalactic dust and a spiral of cosmic fireflies, this relaxed kitty is more concerned with cleaning itself. Taillefer suggests that instinct and attitude are just as important to development as our genetic birthright. The Most Proximate Cause also comments on the elements that compose and constitute “destiny.” Taillefer offers a modern-day Damocles, cowering under a canopy of choices. Hanging above this anonymous nude, male subject is a crushing load of gears, blades, cogs, and other mechanical parts, an analogue to the pressures and excesses of modern life. The Angels of our Nature is a visual summary of Taillefer’s personal creation myth. Bringing together the realms of sea and land, air and matter, animal and human, the painting depicts life transformations that occur in body and spirit, with the central image of the individual as warrior.

Interdimensional Art Show : Seattle

June 1st, 2009 by Delvin Solkinson

Art Unifies.Interdimensional Art Movement Seattle Exhibition

Reflecting a message beyond words, the Spirit of the new Art speaks to people across languages and cultures, borders and cultural backgrounds, ages and education levels. Bridging together a network of previously unconnected art movements, these links are empowering local artists and art movements by connecting them to a huge global movement. With artists from five of the worlds continents, the Interdimensional Art Show is sharing color from a diversity of places, traditions and perspectives.

Nestled in the chillout sensibility of the 'left coast', beyond a fantastic selection of art was an activated selection of musicians, djs, performers, dancers, fashion designers, models and visionary activists blazing a trail of life across the urban culturescape of modern Seattle. Curated by Herbanmama of Tribe 13 and Michael of Starborne Productions, this event illustrated the potential of art to connect up different threads in the weave.

Joining with Nemo of R6XX I helped set up an arts market that we visioned as a microgallery and art altar displaying an array of accessible and affordable keep sakes and home additions to bring this color out beyond the gathering.

Dappled in starlight under a wide open sky, after the show I realized how wonderfully it had been able to affirm the role and place of art in the culture, spreading light out across the world like all those stars above me. This many splendored art tour culminates with a month long gallery show at Fenario in Eugene, Oregon in June.
