Damian Fulton and Robert Palacios at La Luz de Jesus 7/2 – 8/1
July 2nd, 2010 by Lee Joseph
Tonight, two artists who take their inspiration from the very turf they live on here in Southern California open their shows at La Luz de Jesus – Gallery I
Damian Fulton is fascinated with the dichotomy and duality of Los Angeles seaside culture and blends storytelling, scrambled pop imagery, and painterly technique with the reality of what living in the city presents to a “waterman” who lives within its’ boundaries — overcrowding, visible air, opaque water, metal, concrete, glass and language barriers, no-stop noise, density and a twist of “pop culture over-stimulation”
Fulton’s urban surfers are powerful figures who battle natural and man made elements that under other conditions would beat a mortal human being down.
In Surfploytation, Fulton’s works were created with materials native to his environment such as balsa wood and fiberglass, skate decks, and surfboard fins. Fulton has also included a series of watercolors titled The Fall and Rise of Sue Nammi.
Robert Palacios draws from his life experiences and his American / Latino heritage, citing the mystical and magical symbols and drawings found on a Mexican lottery card game known as La Loteria as a major inspiration on his works. Palacios’ paintings focus on his characters who he puts in humorous situations creating visual narratives of every-day life with a twist in his current La Luz de Jesus show titled The Game Of Life.
The show runs through Sunday August 1 along side a six-person group show in Gallery II featuring Michael Brown, Frijol Boy, Lauren Gardiner, Cristina Paulos, Alyson Souza, Fiddle Tim. La Luz de Jesus is open 7 days a week.
