696-Ink-flyer-backOver the last few years it has come to our attention that, whilst there is a growing Surreal/Pop Surrealist Art movement in Melbourne, there are very few local galleries focusing on this scene. 696 Ink Gallery aims to support and strengthen this movement within Australia.

Temple of Visions Gallery & Sacred Space – Womb of Creation

December 12th, 2009 by Leo Plaw
Temple of Visions 2010 Exhibition - Womb of Creation

Temple of Visions 2010 Exhibition - Womb of Creation

Jan. 9, Los Angeles – Temple of Visions dives onto the Los Angeles art scene with a new 2500 sq. ft. gallery & sacred space. Helmed by downtown resident & art scene regular Jimmy Bleyer, Temple of Visions seeks to bridge International visionary culture with the Los Angeles art world.

The gallery of contemporary spiritual art will feature two permanent installations. In the main gallery, Dreaming Co:nexus, a collaborative group from the Pacific Northwest, will build a luscious and natural Earth Temple. Progressing through the gallery, you will find the Galactic Temple performance space, created by San Francisco artist XAVI. Additionally, the gallery contains a guest curator’s salon, retail & print store, a raw food bar, and a 500 sq ft malleable space for special events, live art, etc.

The Earth Temple will house the opening group show, ‘Womb of Creation’, with participating luminary artists from around the world including: Martina Hoffmann, Robert Venosa, Mars-1, Oliver Vernon, HR Giger, Mark Henson, Amanda Sage, Adam Scott Miller, Carey Thompson, Satoshi Sakamoto, Leo Plaw, David Heskin, Aloria Weaver, Raul Casillas, Autumn Skye Morrison & many more. TOV is proud to be leading the charge into Los Angeles with this exciting cross section of a global movement that has been tragically underrepresented here. Jimmy & the Temple make it their mission to raise awareness of this positive, transformative, revealing art.

In addition, well regarded digital visionary ANDROID JONES contributes with a guest curated digital salon and large scale outdoor projections. Local favorite SHRINE will team up with powerhouse painter Amanda Sage for a mural in the back gallery.

The Gallery seeks to create a spectacular environment that will bring people together in admiration of art, and in transformation of self and community. In addition to quarterly epics, the Temple will feature a monthly music & visionary culture party, a ’boutique concert series’, and several consciousness raising classes, workshops, and lectures from the galactic pulpit.

The opening night will be a huge celebration, with neighbors & friends The Hive Gallery & Studios opening on the same night. A single ticket gets you in both explosive shows. Together, the galleries seek to make the 700 block of Spring Street a must-visit destination for art loving Angelinos and visitors alike. Meta Gallery Alex Grey Exhibition

July 20th, 2009 by Delvin Solkinson

Art is Vision

It was a time to remember. Hundreds gathered for this historic occasion, the first time Alex Grey and Allyson Grey had come to Toronto and one of only a few rare visits to Canada in the past decades.

Viewing Alex Grey's newest work at the Meta Gallery ExhibitionThe experience began at the newly opened Meta Gallery in the artistic atmosphere of the distillery district in downtown Toronto. This brick and mortar old town from the late 1800’s hosts a collection of galleries, restaurants and theaters.

The opening reception for the two month long exhibition was packed from the moment it opened until many hours after the time it was originally supposed to close. Featuring some breathtaking new paintings, rarely seen older work from a private collection, live paintings, and studies of some of Alex Grey’s better known pieces, the gallery walls were full of visionary treasures.

People spent hours taking in the rich detail of these incredible testaments to the spirit of the human imagination.

Alex Grey and Allyson Grey were present all night engaging in non-stop dialogues, signings and revelry with the hundreds that passed through that night.

To celebrate the night, a run of 100 special signed and numbered, limited edition prints of the ‘Vajra Being’ were made and are available through the Meta Gallery.

Alex Grey explores his work 'Reading' at the Meta Gallery Exhibition.

Credit is due to Jody, Meiko and Chris, the gallery stewards, for organizing such a professional and successful event.

The following afternoon 160 of us gathered the stunning St. Stephen-in-the-Fields Anglican church. With soft light pouring through the stained glass windows, a huge organ on the wall and specially designed architecture to carry the sound throughout the pews. A feeling of divinity filled the space.

Alex Grey stood up on the pulpit and delivered some poetry from his book ‘Art Psalms’ to the gentle sounds of a flute which danced around the room. Aided by a screen of slides, he took us on a visionary tour of his life and Work. Afterwards Alex Grey engaged people in dialogues and signed a series in the seemingly endless amount of books and prints he signed over the weekend.

That evening the Suma crew threw a sold out all night party at a gorgeous location alongside a riverway from the Great Lake. Alex Grey and Allyson Grey said a few words then proceeded to do an amazing live painting performance that had a huge crowd of people watching long into the night.

The Meta Gallery exhibition continues until September 4th and is a worthy pilgrimage for anyone interested in the work of Alex Grey.

The incredible CoSM Sanctuary in New York is in the process of being established and is seeking support.

For any art lovers interested in an adventure, the Grey’s are making another appearance in Canada at the end of July at the fabled Hollyhock retreat center on Cortez Island. Deep in the wilds of the west coast rainforest, way way off the beaten path and well worth the trip.

The art of Alex Grey and Allyson Grey inscribes itself on the memory and imagination of those who can really take it in. Seeing the colorful visions on the web and in books is one thing, but to see the originals or hear them talk in person is a whole Other experience altogether.

The Art and Vision of this weekend will grace my memory through the ages ahead.

Alex Grey – Meta Gallery

June 18th, 2009 by Delvin Solkinson
Alex Grey comes to Canada

Meta Gallery is pleased to present Anatomy of Being, new and old works by Alex Grey. In the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, as well as the first exhibition of his work in Canada in over 20 years. The works exhibited represent a wide spectrum of the inner and outer worlds Alex Grey depicts through his artworks during the years spanning 1999-2009. With a career going back over 3 decades, Alex Grey’s paintings represent a bold and courageous statement in contemporary art today. One where despite the collective struggle of humanity and the tremendous amounts of suffering occurring on a daily basis, good exists. And what Alex Grey’s artwork offers is evidence – a tangible thing we can see and touch that in its silence is a potent reminder to be good, and to love.

Alex will be attending the exhibition and also giving a talk on his art and life, Saturday June 27th, 2009.

Interdimensional Art Show : Seattle

June 1st, 2009 by Delvin Solkinson

Art Unifies.Interdimensional Art Movement Seattle Exhibition

Reflecting a message beyond words, the Spirit of the new Art speaks to people across languages and cultures, borders and cultural backgrounds, ages and education levels. Bridging together a network of previously unconnected art movements, these links are empowering local artists and art movements by connecting them to a huge global movement. With artists from five of the worlds continents, the Interdimensional Art Show is sharing color from a diversity of places, traditions and perspectives.

Nestled in the chillout sensibility of the 'left coast', beyond a fantastic selection of art was an activated selection of musicians, djs, performers, dancers, fashion designers, models and visionary activists blazing a trail of life across the urban culturescape of modern Seattle. Curated by Herbanmama of Tribe 13 and Michael of Starborne Productions, this event illustrated the potential of art to connect up different threads in the weave.

Joining with Nemo of R6XX I helped set up an arts market that we visioned as a microgallery and art altar displaying an array of accessible and affordable keep sakes and home additions to bring this color out beyond the gathering.

Dappled in starlight under a wide open sky, after the show I realized how wonderfully it had been able to affirm the role and place of art in the culture, spreading light out across the world like all those stars above me. This many splendored art tour culminates with a month long gallery show at Fenario in Eugene, Oregon in June.

San Francisco Interdimensional Art Show

May 14th, 2009 by Delvin Solkinson

Interdimensional Art MovementArt is destiny.

This feeling seemed to come to life at the edge of the North American art movement during the 7th annual Interdimensional Art show in San Francisco, USA. A huge collection of people came together to celebrate art culture and affirm the place of San Francisco as a glowing heart of the new West Coast. This historic event was put together by Jennifer 'Herbanmama' and Roman of www.tribe13.com

This incredible gathering of visionary culture brought to light the transforming times with a defining collection of art, music and new fashion. When people arrived they stepped from a dull street side into a colorful new world of possibilities.

The new Temple nightclub is an epic location on the horizon of the San Francisco nightscape. Last year the visionary artist Xavi did an incredibly potent interior design installation of a stargate portal deep within the club. The show hosted 40 original works from a diverse collection of visionary artists who brought together an incredible selection of art and wonder.

The artists included:

Robert Venosa, Martina Hoffmann, Daniel Mirante, Brigid Marlin, Pablo Amaringo, Philip Rubinov Jacobson, Andrew Gonzalez, Guy Aitchison, Mark Henson, Roman Villagrana, Laurence Caruana, Leo Plaw, Amanda Sage, Satoshi Sakamoto, Jarah Tree, Pablo Amaringo, Chris Dyer, Carey Thompson, David Heskin, Aloria Weaver, Eric Nez, Simon Haiduk, Julia Eldridge, St. Even, Kathryn “Ka” June, Andrew Jones, Andy Thomas (Android), Luke Brown, Imago Dei, Nate Valensky, Raul Casillas Romo, Valerie Lambert, Nemo Boko, Matthew Poplopski, Phidelity, Nikila Badu, Phong

Taking pictures up until the afternoon of the show we managed to collate a program for the show illustrating all the original works it featured. The experience had an amazing soundtrack as well, brought by a collection of djs, performers and mc's bringing their music through a high end sound system.

Old Skool VS. New Skool – Pulse Contemporary Art Fair NYC

The Juxtapoz Factor (Juxtapoz School) NYC book launch

March 5 through March 8, 2009

Copro Gallery, in our debut appearance at Pulse NY is excited to present Old Skool Vs. New Skool, a mix of pioneering Old Skool artists contrasted against another generation of New Skoolers who are direct beneficiaries of the artistic breakthroughs spearheaded by Robert Williams, Robert Crumb and Rick Griffin.

This exhibition organically grows from an art movement that has been documented and promoted by best selling art magazine Juxtapoz. Laguna Art Museum recently featured and validated Juxtapoz's support and influence of this skill-based pop surrealist movement with a block buster exhibition curated by Meg Linton of Otis college of Art and Design. Following this with a just released historic catalogue In the Land of Retinal Delights – The Juxtapoz Factor (Juxtapoz School) Copro Gallery will be hosting the East Coast Launch and book signing on the first day of Pulse.

On display will be: R. Crumb's, "Fritz The No Good", the entire long lost "City Of The Future" from Zap 0,  Robert Williams most famous and controversial painting "Appetite for Destruction" (below right,)  Rick Griffin's masterpiece of cross hatching "OMO Bob" and much more. These important artists helped bust down the underground door for a new generation and movement of fresh artists with a brand new style.

These New Skool artists ranging from visionary Lola, Nathan Spoor, Dan May (below right) and Laurie Lipton of London to New York artists Martin Wittfooth, Ron English and Travis Louie will present their latest work.  We hope you join us for this museum quality exhibition and book signing event.

AOI and IFAA Become Sister Art Societies

February 23rd, 2009 by Leo Plaw
Michel de Saint Ouen and Shoji Tanaka

Shoji Tanaka and Michel de Saint Ouen

London based Society for the Art of Imagination (AOI) have twinned with International Fantastic Art Association (IFAA) which is based in Japan. As a first step all members of IFAA and AOI will be able to submit works to each other's exhibitions. Together they are exploring the possibility of organizing exhibitions in Japan for our members and European exhibitions for IFAA’s members.

The IFAA had been long aware of the AOI. After exhibiting with the IFAA in Japan I told the Shoji Tanaka the group's president, that I would speak with Brigid Marlin the AOI president and make an introduction. And so, on one cold and wet day in London I met Brigid for tea (very English) and she eagerly listened to my adventures in Japan. I then put the two in contact with each other. So it came to pass that Shoji was invited to exhibit with the AOI in their annual exhibition last year.

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the event myself to witness this wonderful occasion.

It was at this time that a mutual agreement of society friendship was established and both groups decided to explore ways to collaborate together. It is a very exciting time as the Fantastic Art groups across the world reach out to each other to build a common future.

Shoji wrote a number of entries on his own personal blog about his time in London meeting the AOI. All articles are in Japanese of course, but a good online translator will help you get the gist of things. He seems to be very pleased and excited by meeting everyone and the opportunities it opens up for the IFAA.

Temple of Visions – International Visionary Art & Print Show – Opening

January 9th, 2009 by Amanda Sage

Amanda Sage attends and reviews Temple of Visions – International Visionary Art & Print Exhibition – Opening at the Hive Gallery in Los Angeles.

Temple of Visions exhibition, Los Angeles, 2009

The first time I entered the HIVE at 2am the night before the opening after flying in from Denver; I got shivers felt the buzz and was blown away from the diversity and quality of work. The 'Temple' is situated in the middle of the Gallery adorned with flames and reverence, a painting installation by SHRINE. It is a powerful space to say the least, it definitely asks for respect once you enter, the images beckoning on into a woven tale of visionary realms. I must say that it was a bit of a disappointment to see some of these great images just in Giclee print form… they just don't hold up next to the glowing originals. I can't wait to see the best in this genre of amazing paintings (as originals) in a museum. Someday it will happen.

Over 600 is the estimate of colorful people that showed for the opening. Besides the masses, meeting the artists from the Temple of Visions show that came from far and wide for the opening was my own personal highlight. Such beautiful amazing people, like meeting old family members, and knowing that this is just the beginning. Some of the visiting artists were: Michael Brown, David Heskin, Aloria Weaver, Adam Scott Miller, as well as meeting some of the local artists such as Jimmy Bleyer, Radhika Hersey, Sensei, Orion, Lindsay Swan.

Temple of Visions - exhibitorsI've never been to an Art Opening where there was a line out the door of people waiting to pay $8 to get in. It wasn't one of those parties with Art on the walls where the lights get turned off after a couple hours and you can't see the art any more. Tonight, the 8th of Jan. there is the monthly Artwalk, and up to 5000 people are expected out to tour the downtown L.A Galleries.

This show is yet only a beginning, as is the plan of Jimmy Bleyer – initiator and curator of the Temple… I've heard whispers of some of the future plans, there are 6 more shows ahead, but I can't spill the beans on anything else, as much as I'd like to. I have a funny feeling that this is the beginning of something ready to hatch, the time is coming, the world is waiting, and L.A seems to be a pretty big hotspot ready for some Visionary Glow.

The Temple of Visions features:

Robert Venosa, Martina Hoffmann, Alex Grey, Allyson Grey, Laurence Caruana, Amanda Sage, Mark Henson, Andrew Gonzalez, James Zar, Michael Brown, Dan Cohen, Micha Colory Krebs, David Heskin, Aloria Weaver, Leo Plaw, Voytek Nowakowski, Kuba Fiedorowicz, Orion, Adam Scott Miller, Delphia, Jamie Burton, Adam S.
