Bruce Bickford Clay Animator Doco

May 8th, 2007 by Jon Beinart

I discovered Bruce Bickford's psychedelic clay animation a few years ago on the Frank Zappa movie 'Baby Snakes' and have been addicted to his work to this day. Bruce Bickford is an under rated (and relatively unknown) Visionary Artist. I was overwhelmed with excitement when I heard that a documentary had been made on the man himself. I ordered it online as soon as I heard 'Monster Road' was available and was not disapointed. Monster Road not only documents the life of an artist who I believe is one of the greatest living Clay animators (who's name I would only utter in the same sentence with greats like Jan Svankmajer), but it is also a fine cinematic masterpiece itself (winner of many awards inc. Slamdance Film Festival Best Documentary Jury Prize 2004). I strongly recomend Monster Road to all Stop animation and Documentary enthusiasts alike. Anyway, enough of my subjective rambling, please check out the YouTube trailer in the top right hand side of this post and see for yourself.

Here is an exerpt from an article on Bickford (sourced from the brighteyepictures website)

Bickford’s films can transport us back to a state of early childhood, where everything is new, and where we are suspended in a state of amused awe. A blade of grass, a tree, a sword, an eerily smiling face are all wonders of great mystery in this state. Things appear and disappear, and events happen inexplicably. Danger and splendor are both just around the corner. Everything is at once beautiful and frightening.

Kris Kuksi the prolific Sculptor

May 7th, 2007 by Jon Beinart

Sculpture by Kris Kuksi & his pages in MetamorphosisI am continually impressed by the detail and magnificence of Kris Kuksi's sculptures. He must never stop to eat or sleep. Since I met Kris (online) I have seen a new sculpture almost every fortnight. Each more detailed than the last. I am also fortunate enough to own an original drawing by Kris, which can be seen in the beinArt Collection. Kris is just as talented at Drawing & Painting as he is with mixed media sculpture. I look forward to meeting Kris and seeing his sculptures in the flesh.

Here is an artists statement Kris wrote for Metamorphosis (beinArt Publishing) in 2006:

"Perhaps it is far too objectionable to begin to agree upon what art is or what great art should be. Therefore, it is most certain that for myself, within this occupation, I must be true to my tastes and to expel those pressures to conform to art-trends new or
old."

Kris Kuksi is one of 50 Surreal, Fantastic & Visionary Artists featured in our first publication entitled Metamorphosis

Installation of Wolves Hurtling into a wall

May 7th, 2007 by Jon Beinart

Cai Guo-Qiang: Head On

A very impressive installation I stumbled into on a random search for inspiration. Dont call the RSPCA. These are not real wolves!

Title: Head On

Date: August 26—October 15, 2006

Exhibition: Cai Guo-Qiang: Head On

Institution: Deutsche Guggenheim

Location: Berlin, Germany

Materials: 99 life-sized replicas of wolves and glass

Concept: With few wolves scattered in the front gallery, all ninety-nine wolves run, gallop, and jump toward the far end of the exhibition hall, where a wall stands. The bravery of the wolves is met head on by the unyielding wall. As the leading wolves go down, many more follow with force and determination. As those in the front fall and pile up, those behind take up their positions.

Patricia Piccinini’s Anthropomorphic Sculpture.

May 6th, 2007 by Jon Beinart

We Are Family by Patricia PiccininiPatricia Piccinini is the famous Australian Conceptual Artist behind this strangely beautiful anthropomorphic sculpture. The sculpture to the right was created by Australian Sculptor Sam Jinks under the direction of Piccinini.

'The Young Family' from the 'We Are Family' exhibition.

Materials: Silicone, acrylic, human hair, leather, timber

Dimensions: 80 x 150 x 110 cm (irreg.)

Piccinini explores what she calls the 'often specious distinctions between the artificial and the natural'. By displaying the similarities and differences between the organic, natural and our constructed material world, Piccinini challenges our classification of life. This inspires her to combine human and animal physiology and technological development in many of her works.
