3 - Chris Mars, Naoto Hattori and Matt Dangler

Chris Mars Naoto Hattori Matt Dangler

Beinart Gallery presents 3, an exhibition of dark narrative paintings from three internationally celebrated artists - Chris Mars, Naoto Hattori & Matt Dangler. This will be a debut exhibition for all three artists in Australia and a rare opportunity for their Australian fans to see their exquisitely detailed work in the flesh. While the work of these artists is wonderfully diverse, there are a number of shared elements that connect the work in this cohesive exhibition. All three artists create phenomenally intricate work with dark satirical motifs and otherworldly themes.

WHEN: Opens April 30, 6pm - 9pm. Runs until May 24.

Chris Mars’ work is influenced and inspired by his brother Joe's experiences with mental illness, for which Joe was periodically institutionalised during Chris's childhood. The sensitivity and empathy Chris developed relative to these experiences are evident in his visual art, which serves to raise awareness of the various issues associated with mental illness and its treatment, as well as confronting xenophobia in its various social and psychological incarnations. Chris’s pieces are held in numerous public collections including The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, The Erie Art Museum, The Tweed, The Longview Museum of Fine Arts and The Minnesota History Centre.

Naoto Hattori studied Graphic Design in Tokyo before moving to New York to study in the School of Visual Arts. He has received awards from the Society of Illustrators, the New York Directors Club, Communication Arts and also he has won numerous art competitions and has been published in many art magazines. Of his work, he says: "My vision is like a dream, whether it's a sweet dream, a nightmare, or just a trippy dream. I try to see what's really going on in my mind, and that's a practice to increase my awareness in stream-of-consciousness creativity. I try not to label or think about what is supposed to be, just take it in as it is and paint whatever I see in my mind with no compromise. That way, I create my own vision."

Matt Dangler received his BFA in Illustration from UArts, Philadelphia PA. Matt has received the Kennedy Award for representation of the human figure and the Roger T. Hane Illustration Prize for outstanding achievement in illustration. Says Tim Maclean, for wow x wow, “Matt Dangler constructs fantastically inspired and engaging imagery, which contains the power to reveal new and undiscovered aspects of the personalities of each and every one of us, by speaking directly to our subconscious and therefore our inherent inner beings."
