The paintings of Adrian Cox chronicle the lives of the Border Creatures, a race of hybrid beings that inhabit the lush wilderness of the Borderlands. The Border Creatures exist in symbiotic harmony with the natural world. However, they are frequently antagonized by the Specters, beings of pure energy that casually burn the landscape that they walk upon. In Awakenings, Cox expands his intricate mythology through a series of origin stories. Looking back to the earliest days of the Border Creatures, Cox reveals the sacrifices and trials that allowed a group of humans to transform themselves and their forest home. Simultaneously, this exhibition follows the quest of Penitent Spirit, a new being in the Borderlands that seeks atonement for their past life as a Specter.
In these paintings, Cox uses his epic science fiction mythology to present journeys of personal transformation and speak to ways in which such changes can alter the larger world around us. In the origin story of the Border Creatures, a group of humans seek to reforge a connection with each other and the environment. However, they are able to do so only by sacrificing the memory of their humanity. In Penitent Spirit’s ongoing quest for redemption, a being that once ravaged the Borderlands searches for a new way of existing. Ultimately, these works are informed by the anxieties and hopes of living today and give shape to the question of how we might transform our own relationships with each other and the natural world.
