Alex Garant & Lukifer Aurelius – Seeing Between
Seeing Between is a two-person exhibition of new oil paintings by Alex Garant and Lukifer Aurelius.
Garant’s work features portraits embellished with quadruple-vision motifs, unsettling the viewer by almost literally jarring the view on conventional portraiture. Aurelius’s work also treads the line between the familiar and the unfamiliar, with the quiet beauty of dreamlike figures seemingly infused with fire or, at the very least, embers, striking a chord with perhaps our most primitive memories.
OPENING NIGHT: Saturday, May 5, from 6pm – 9pm. Free entry.
This exhibition runs from May 5 to May 27 and runs alongside Shaun Tan solo exhibition, “Lost & Found”.
Lukifer Aurelius has been exploring different states of experience through the idea of the individual as a constellation of forces and subpersonalities; some of this is manifested through gesture and spatial arrangement. Aurelius has also explored the intersection between the familiar and the unfamiliar, where one’s conceptual frameworks are met with forces more complex and mysterious than can be accounted for.
Lukifer Aurelius is a New Zealand-born, Brisbane-based painter. In 2011, Aurelius moved to Brisbane to study classical drawing and painting techniques in a traditional atelier environment. Working mainly with oils, Aurelius creates surreal, multi-figure compositions that serve as personal meditations on the plurality of individuality, as well as on the individual relationship to the unknown and the unknowable that underpins our experience of the world. With a primarily intuitive process of ideation, Aurelius embraces the ambiguous character of each visual element and its place within a scene, aiming to allow for dynamic layers of tension and harmony to arise.
Alex Garant’s pieces in this show explore the idea that what we see and what we feel are never the same: there is a disconnect between visual stimuli and the emotional response associated with them. While maintaining a seductive aesthetic and working with traditional media, Alex Garant’s new series is meant to invite the viewer into a different way to experience art. Her work creates a tension between beauty and disharmony.
Internationally renowned as the Queen of Double Eyes, Alex Garant studied visual arts at Notre-Dame-De-Foy College just outside Quebec City, Canada. After graduating in 2001, she ultimately settled in Toronto.
She decided to commit to her passion for art after suffering a heart attack in 2012, changing forever how she would see the world. She is a pioneer of contemporary figurative op art. Her oil paintings offer a graphic quality combined with traditional portrait techniques. Garant has established herself as one of the leaders of analog Glitch Art by using patterns, duplication of elements, symmetry and image superposition as key elements of her imagery.
Garant has shown works in galleries all over Canada and the United States as well as Australia and Portugal. Her works have also been shown at The Fullerton Museum and The Lancaster Museum of Art and History (MOAH) in California. Finally, her works have been seen in magazines such as Hi-Fructose, Juxtapoz and Beautiful Bizarre and on multiple online platforms, including VICE, The Huffington Post and Buzznet.
Complimentary wine will be available at the opening. For those wanting a non-alcoholic option, we will also have drinks provided by Remedy Kombucha.
