d’Errico is fascinated by the culture of monsters and urban legends and the mythologies that people around the world believe to be real. She notes that for thousands of years, humans have imagined and told others about the things that go bump in the night, or give reasons for the bubbles that surface from cold bodies of water. She loves to lose herself in the “what ifs” of these tales: if Cerberus, for example, were real, what would she want him to look like?
Exploring the various monsters and myths of the world and bringing her own spin to them is something of a dream come true. For this series, she wanted to channel the dichotomy of colors and creatures alike, so for each painting, she used contrasting colors purposefully. There is a push and pull with the hues that balances the imagery, and when put alongside, they create a beautiful rainbow. This was intentional, to unite the pieces themselves and the folklores of the world in a singular way to highlight the unity of imagination that exists in every part of the earth.
Camilla d’Errico is an Italo-Canadian artist based in Vancouver Island, Canada. Her works weave manga and comic art with surrealist elements, and in addition to creating fine art and comics, she has expanded her work into toys, fashion, accessories, and other merchandise.
