Opening reception: Saturday, May 30th, 5 – 8 pm. This is a free event. As Beinart Gallery is a licensed venue, any minors attending the opening reception will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.

This exhibition will run from May 31st - Jun 21st, 2026 and will coincide with Sean Layh's Studies in Narrative, and Tanya Gomelskaya's Inside Out.

This fresh crop of paintings introduces a whole new cast of characters, fantastical beasties Kennedy imagines hiding beneath flower petals, frolicking in the undergrowth, or galavanting in some mystical, untouched corner of the woods. With gentle nods to the twisted wit and surreal logic of Alice in Wonderland, these paintings open onto a Lewis Carroll-esque world where humour, curiosity, and strangeness exist side by side.

New Zealand-based artist and certifiable weirdo Michael Kennedy (aka Malangeo) creates wonderfully strange portraits of “creepy-cute” critters, sugar-crazed beasties and fragile floral beings. His work blends traditional oil painting techniques with a contemporary pop surrealist flare. Raised on the irreverent humour of cartoons and comics like The Farside and Calvin & Hobbes, he brings that same offbeat charm to his work through pieces that ooze with whimsy, dark humour and pop culture references.
