BOOK SIGNING: Shaun Tan will be signing his books at the gallery on October 17th. A priority signing for visitors with small children or limited mobility will run from 10am - 11am, followed by general access from 11am - 2pm. A selection of Tan’s books will be available for purchase, and due to expected high turnout, we are limiting the number of signed books to 2 per person. This signing will be for books only, no prints, posters or other objects will be personalised or signed on the day.

First published in 2013, “Rules of Summer” was awarded the Picture Book of The Year Award by the Children’s Book Council of Australia, a Boston Globe Horn Book Honour in the US, and shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal in the UK.
Featuring large-scale impasto oil paintings on canvas, developmental pencil and pastel sketches, and early notebook doodles, “Ten Years of Summer” is at once an examination of the artistic process of one of Australia and the world’s most beloved picture-book creators, and a complete visual story that wends its way across the exhibition space. A decade on from original publication, this tale of two siblings enjoying a fateful summer during which anything imaginable is possible, “Rules of Summer” continues to inspire young and old readers across the globe. This showcase will be the first, and last time the work will be exhibited in its entirety, with most of original pieces available for purchase.
Shaun Tan grew up in Perth and works as an artist, writer and filmmaker in Melbourne. He is best known for illustrated books that deal with social and historical subjects through dream-like imagery, such as The Arrival, The Red Tree and Tales from the Inner City. Tan is the recipient of an Academy Award for the short animated film The Lost Thing, the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in Sweden and the Kate Greenaway Medal in the UK.
