Relic: an object, tradition, or system from the past that continues to exist. (Cambridge Dictionary)
In this collection Kilgast imagines new habitats developing in the discarded commodities of humanity—remnants of a bygone era. These works illustrate nature's tenacity in reclaiming space, even in the aftermath of human neglect, and remind us that our actions have a real, often devastating, impact on our surroundings. The works' colours, details, and aesthetics are an ode to nature's stunning beauty and a reminder of the need to fight for its preservation.
Stéphanie Kilgast is a French artist whose work celebrates the resilience and beauty of nature. Drawing inspiration from biodiversity, she creates vibrant sculptures where plants, fungi, and animals bloom in intricate, colourful ecosystems. Often using found objects as bases, Kilgast transforms discarded items into lush environments, reflecting on humanity’s impact on the natural world.
Guided by her mantra—“Let nature grow back. Protect biodiversity. Consume less”—her art strikes a balance between hope and critique, serving as a reminder of nature’s ability to regenerate if given the chance. Born in 1985 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, she currently resides in Vannes, France, and her work is exhibited internationally.
