This collection has evolved from Secker’s longstanding exploration of consciousness, connections, and the evolution present in nature, with the integration of technology serving as a tool to deepen these inquiries. The creative process has opened new avenues for nuanced exploration of these themes. A particular interest of the artist is the imaginative transformation of natural creatures into entirely new beings, a concept that resonates with the innovative techniques employed in the creation process.
Through experimentation with generative artificial intelligence programs, Secker frequently employed text prompts, ranging from the vaguely defined to the outright nonsensical, alongside images of her own paintings and natural history illustrations to gauge the technology’s creative interpretations. The outcomes were often surprising, birthing new organisms and landscapes ripe for artistic rendition.
Initially, the AI’s tendency to integrate random letters and nonsensical words into its imagery led the artist to use these elements as prompts, alongside her personal artworks, yielding intriguing and unforeseen results. These experiments suggested that, to the AI, such randomness bore hidden meanings, with specific phrases consistently producing images of bizarre, bear-like creatures, or strange hybridisations of biological entities with man-made objects. This phenomenon echoes the surrealist pursuit of finding meaning in the absurd, akin to automatic writing, and highlights an era of AI technology where randomness and serendipity suggested access to an artificial subconscious.
However, as large language model technology has advanced over the past two years, becoming more adept at rendering anatomically precise features and aligning more closely with real-world coherence, the generation of unexpected, surreal images from this artificial subconscious has diminished. This evolution draws a parallel to the human experience, where engagement with the imaginative world often wanes as one's understanding of the real world deepens with age.
Catriona Secker is an artist and teacher living in Sydney, Australia. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Painting, from the University of NSW in 1999, and a Master of Electronic Arts, majoring in Computer Animation, from the Australian National University in 2003. Her work has been exhibited in galleries across Australia as well as in Hong Kong and the United States.
Inspired by old natural history illustrations and biology texts, her work is influenced by a wide range of visual styles, including fine art, illustration, visionary and decorative arts. She is intrigued by processes in nature such as growth and reproduction as well as the idea of consciousness in nature. She's also fascinated by the infinite variety of natural forms that exist on the one hand, and the patterns and structures that continually recur amongst such diversity on the other, being particularly drawn to small organisms, especially invertebrates. These organisms are often combined and transformed into new and conscious beings in her work.
