Waves of Lament is a new collection of paintings by Robert Duxbury. The exhibition showcases a collection of evocative and emotive artworks that offer a thought-provoking exploration of two interconnected themes: vulnerability and the lament that arises from it.

This exhibition will run from May 28th - June 18th and will coincide with Erika Sanada & Calvin Ma's Hand in Hand, Nom Kinnear King's The Yarrows and Folk Horror, a group show curated by Indigo Rawson-Smith.

The exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the concept of vulnerability and its multifaceted nature. The paintings portray moments of raw openness, fragility and emotional exposure, capturing the inherent vulnerability that comes with the human condition. The artworks depict vulnerable individuals painted tenderly, evoking a sense of emotional sensitivity and rawness. Through the paintings, viewers are encouraged to contemplate the complexities and nuances of vulnerability in the modern world and how it impacts our lives and relationships.

The exhibition also delves into the theme of lament, which is a profound expression of grief, sorrow, or mourning. The paintings depict scenes of loss, longing or lamentation, capturing the depth and intensity of human emotions when confronted with adversity, tragedy or sorrow, inviting reflection on the role of lamentation as a cathartic and transformative process of healing and growth.

Robert Duxbury, based in Melbourne, is mostly self-taught. For several years he lived in the Guangdong province of China, where he studied traditional Chinese Gongbi and ink wash painting. He had spent nearly 15 years exclusively painting street art, and his experience in China led him to pursue a more traditional studio-based practice. Duxbury explores the human condition through his paintings, relying heavily on symbolism and mood, with inspiration from the classical romanticism and symbolism movements.
