Ruby Li

Ruby Li is an oil painter whose work blends realism and surrealism to explore identity, estrangement, and emotional contradiction. Of Chinese heritage, raised in New Zealand and now based in Melbourne, her practice reflects the loneliness of being culturally displaced and the uncertainty of belonging. Her paintings centre on contrasts—joy and grief, beauty and unease; rendered through vivid colour and mood-driven compositions. An often recurring motif in her work, the stone guardian lions reference cultural inheritance and alienation, inviting viewers to reflect on their own unresolved inner tensions.
