Unreal is an exhibition of new paintings by Scott Listfield about how the lines between our digital lives and our real lives has blurred beyond recognition. This show is inspired by the artist’s consideration of the effect of AI on human creativity and our wider lives, as well as our perceptions of creative work.

This exhibition will run from October 29th - November 19th and will coincide with Brian Viveros' show, Dirty Deeds and the Toddlerpillars custom toy art show.

We have also released a limited edition print of Kaboom.

Are we living in the last days of human creativity? Will our movies be written and directed by machines and our songs written by robots? Our art created by unseen AI? Our novels written by a computer that did a better job reading Ulysses than we did? Will we ever again be able to trust that a photograph is real? That the Wes Anderson movie we are watching was made by Wes Anderson and not a Wes Anderson algorithm? Will our smart appliances take it personally when we don't want to have a conversation with them and launch a nuclear strike on our hometown? We don't have the answer to any of these questions, and it feels right now like we're at the end of something and the beginning of something else.

Listfield notes that it's becoming increasingly hard to determine what is and what is not real. We seem to be at an inflection point, and instead of heeding the cautionary tales depicted in so many movies, we're barreling ahead full steam into an AI age.

All of the paintings in this show were made by a human, but maybe they won't be for long.

Scott Listfield was born in 1976 in Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States. He studied at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, majoring in art, and studied in Italy as well. He moved to Australia for 6 months before returning to the United States. These travels gave him much experience in feeling like an outsider, and this feeling manifests directly in his work.
