Where is the Rain? (Marsupial)

Ink and pencil on paper by Shaun Tan (1997).

Artwork Size: 4.5 x 4.5 cm (1.8" x 1.8")

Framed size: 31 x 34 cm (12.2" x 13.4")

From Shaun Tan: "These illustrations are the only remaining available pieces from 'The Rabbits' written by John Marsden and illustrated by myself in 1997 at the age of 23: literally half a lifetime ago! 'The Rabbits' was a turning point in my early career as an illustrator and remains one of my most well-known and studied works, having survived some controversy in the quarter century since publication, particularly upon being announced Picture Book of the Year in 1999 during the Howard government (which frequently denied the history of genocide in Australia). It remains in print internationally, adapted as an opera by Kate Miller-Heidke with Opera Australia, and distributed to every school in Mexico by the Mexican government, among other unexpected outcomes. You can read more about it on my website, but those collectors interested would already be familiar with the significance of these pieces (more historical now than purely aesthetic)."
