Lukifer Aurelius has been using the figurative subject to explore the idea of self as a multiform, dialectical process, inhabiting various states and spaces of experience. In Inner Spaces, the subject appears in solitude but often as an interplay of different ‘subselves’ blending with and differentiating from one another, often in dramatic and ambiguous ways. The subject is depicted occupying a junction between internal and external worlds: junctions between indoor and outdoor spaces and junctions between an ‘outer’ physical world and an ‘inner’ subjective world.
Lukifer Aurelius (Australia) is a New Zealand-born, Brisbane-based painter. In 2011, Aurelius moved to Brisbane to study classical drawing and painting techniques in a traditional atelier environment. Working mainly with oils, Aurelius creates surreal, multi-figure compositions that serve as personal meditations on the plurality of individuality, as well as on the individual relationship with the unknown and the unknowable that underpins our experience of the world. With a primarily intuitive process of ideation, Aurelius embraces the ambiguous character of each visual element and its place within a scene, aiming to allow for dynamic layers of tension and harmony to arise.
Complimentary wine will be available at the opening. For those wanting a non-alcoholic option, we will also have drinks provided by Remedy Kombucha.
