Beinart Gallery presents Curios, a three person exhibition of paintings, drawings and taxidermy art.

Curios features the anthropomorphic taxidermy creations of Australian artist Lucia Mocnay, the impossibly intricate retro matchbook miniatures of American artist, Jason d’Aquino and the satirical and provocative yet classically painted works of American artist, Scott G. Brooks.

When: Opens May 28, 6pm – 9pm. Runs until June 21.

Lucia Mocnay (Australia) creates ethical anthropomorphic taxidermy, crossing disciplines such as sewing, sculpture, taxidermy, millinery and antiquing to create her artworks. Born in Slovakia, she immigrated to Melbourne, Australia in 1983 where she completed her BFA in 2001 at Monash University. Recently her work has been featured in several international art and culture magazines and she has exhibited at ACMI with the Czech & Slovak Film Festival of Australia. Gathering inspiration from her Slavic roots, the world's folklore, historical costumes and human eccentricities, her work evokes elements of macabre mixed with humour, and delights those with a curious mind.

Scott G Brooks (USA) lives and works in Washington, DC. His paintings are primarily figurative, and range from simple portraiture to intricate narratives. Often using humour, he depicts scenes using social, psychological, and political issues. Anatomical distortions separate the figures from the photographic ideal, which gives him the freedom to create his own distorted reality. His work is described as twisted and offbeat, sentimental, and disturbing. For Curios, Scott has produced a body of work that has given life to mundane everyday relics, such as plastic dolls, and infused these objects into a series of contemporary portraits.

Jason D'Aquino (USA) is a miniaturist. He creates his artwork on an incredibly small scale, many works not exceeding one inch by one inch in dimension. D'Aquino chooses to work on found surfaces such as strike-on-front matchbooks, 18th century animal-skin vellum, and antique ledger pages. His search for these found "canvases" has led him to strange corners of the world and to some unique treasures. He recently unearthed a hand-quilled, illustrated whaling manuscript from St. Petersburg Russia, which made its way to Christies Auction House in New York City. Jason's influences include H.P. Lovecraft, Henry Darger and Hans Bellmer. His drawings, often political in nature, have graced the pages of the New York Times, Juxtapoz, I.T.A., Rue Morgue, Hi-Fructose and Inked Magazine.
