Traditional burial (and funerals) vary widely to cater to many crossovers of culture, religious, economic and regional customs. Most often, the body of the deceased is dressed and placed within a coffin(6 sided shape, tapered towards the feet) or casket(rectangular shaped and often more elaborate) made of wood or metal. The body can be shown with lid open or not, but often accompanies the mourners from a funerary service to the cemetery and is often viewed whilst descending into the grave itself (depth is dependent on graveyard regulations and on whether the grave is shared or for a sole body.) Graves may also employ a concrete or stone burial vault to assist in the ground not shifting in the future as the casket/coffin degrades.
Traditional burial facilitates a specific, tended and maintained place for visitation of the interred body and memorial. They can provide spaces for gatherings(sometimes for a fee, sometimes free) and legacy of family members being interred close together. The types of graves, grave markers and memorialisation products vary widely - in Australia pricing for all these considerations have requirements that vary by state.
In Victoria, with the Funerals Act 2006, price list requirements for funeral providers include:
- A description and total price of your goods and services, including any packages
- A list of any service fees you may charge
- A description and total price of your basic funeral service
- The full range, description and price of all available coffins, or advice that a separate coffin price list is available.
- You must give a copy of the price list (and any separate coffin price list) to anyone who asks about the price of your goods or services.
- Before you enter an agreement, you must give your customer a statement of itemised funeral costs, including service fees, disbursements and your complaint-handling procedure.
