"In painting the first long ‘white’ landscape I was thinking of bones bleaching in the sun, an empty stage left behind after all actors have departed, abandoned urban spaces from Chernobyl to Detroit, an empty whiteness of snow or ash. In the following image, darker drifts are burying the remnants, the atmosphere airless and lunar. In the final image, a total darkness threatens to swallow everything completely, and there’s a suggestion the expanded flock of crows is beyond counting. The sinking train line continues as a joining thread between three canvases."—Shaun Tan
