"These two drawings of the same landscape show the kind of evolution common to many other scenes in the book, testing variations. In this case, trying to create a landscape that best captured a feeling of emotional confusion at a certain moment in the story. I was trying to represent an outside place as an inside one, like a jumble of partly living, partly fossilized organs, the girl clambering over them in search of answers." - Shaun Tan
