This is a pivotal painting from the TV adaptation of Tales from Outer Suburbia, which appears towards the end of this ten-part series. The central character of the show is a young artist struggling with repressed feelings about a fractured home life and who enjoys drawing as a form of escapist relief. When her family move to an unfamiliar outer suburb, several strange encounters there challenge her emotional guardrails, awakening a new understanding of how artistic flights of fancy might be connected to real-world problems, beyond a means to simply run away from them. After much misadventure and doubt, she paints this picture. It shows all the familiar and odd things she has encountered the summer with her mother and brother: a silent buffalo, a lost diver, troublesome cat-girls, a huge ball of unsent letters and other things passing through ordinary suburban streets. As an artist looking through the eyes of a fictional character, I tried to adopt her particular painting style as much as her feeling of being simultaneously bound and adrift (she is the girl in the levitating boat). As she paints, I thought, she comes to realise that she is only lightly tethered to reality, with all its inscrutable mystery and accidental circumstance, by the things she knows and loves. That with each small creative act, these light tethers might become strong bonds, collectively amounting to something she can call ‘home’. - Shaun Tan
