"Reading Room is an illustration for the 2026 NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge, an initiative that invites school-age students to read as widely as possible, now celebrating its 25th year (at the same time as The Red Tree, also born in 2001). I wanted to create an image that celebrated the sheer diversity of experience afforded by reading, especially for young people, and the extent to which those early reading experiences can shape the people we become. All books are not for all people, and reading widely is about finding the right book, one that really opens a door into your soul, one that makes you realise, for all your separateness and weirdness, you are never alone." - Shaun Tan
