Ritual & Chimaephera: Sam Yong & Gerard Geer dual exhibitions

Gerard Geer’s “Chimaephera” takes its name from the words chimaera and ephemeral: the former because the pieces combine bones from multiple animals to form new imaginary creatures and the latter because of the transitory nature of life. Geer’s approach to the works in this exhibit was to imbue them with as much life and movement as possible, exploring the relationships between creatures within a given work while also challenging our understanding of the natural world.

Gerard Geer (Melbourne, Australia) merges creativity with chemistry and anatomy in his artistic practice. His fascination with biological processes and all things anatomical is integral to his work. This fascination led to his undertaking of a bachelor of biological sciences degree at Latrobe University, which he is currently completing. Geer utilises a combination of naturalistic articulation of animal specimens and amalgamations of interspecific forms to create fantastical hybrid creatures. Geer is self-taught in all of the techniques he uses in creating his artworks. On the rare occasions he is not working towards his degree or creating new pieces, he teaches Australia’s first and only skeletal articulation classes.

Sam Yong’s (Melbourne, Australia) latest body of work, “Ritual,” is a series of narratives which draw from the rituals of human life: birth, consumption, courtship, mating, death and grief. Yong presents these themes through traditional painting and drawing techniques, paired with subject matter from the natural world as allegory. Hidden meanings and layered themes begin to emerge beyond the initial viewing and resonate with the audience while still seeming unfamiliar.

Sam Yong is a self-taught painter and illustrator from Melbourne. He works across different traditional media. A self-confessed introvert, Yong has a love of nature and solo adventure: he is often found booking a last-minute flight to a faraway land. His love of solitude, the unknown and the natural world manifests itself through his artwork. The connection between human narratives and nature has always been present in his work, no matter what the medium. Yong’s work has been exhibited in Paris, the United States, New Zealand and Melbourne, along with a multitude of private commissions across the globe.
