E.E. Kono

Erin Eitter Kono is an L.A based artist employing magical realism to explore the fluidity of culture and time.

While she is a self-taught painter, she studied art history at the University of Hull (England) and The University of Iowa (Iowa City, IA). She has also studied traditional egg tempera techniques under the guidance of artist Koo Schadler. Kono is fascinated by the medium’s intense colours and detailed linear qualities but especially by how practicing its slow meditative process connects directly to artists of the past.

Kono’s paintings begin with imagery drawn from mythology and folklore and her imagery is often influenced by nature and a close connection to the sea. Kono is especially interested in the connections between Europe and Asia and how trade and war have transformed each society, and is particularly drawn to mythical traits that echo between cultures.
