Inside Out is Tanya Gomelskaya’s striking reflection on the depths of human emotion, expressed through works that blend traditional oil painting with sculptural elements.

Opening reception: Saturday, May 30th, 5 - 8 pm. This is a free event. As Beinart Gallery is a licensed venue, any minors attending the opening reception will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.

This exhibition will run from May 31st - Jun 21st, 2026 and will coincide with Sean Layh's Studies in Narrative , and Michael Kennedy's Into the Wilds.

Transmuting personal experience through self-portraiture, Gomelskaya often depicts her own body, using it to understand the tension, strain, and vulnerability embedded in every piece. The collection explores love, loss, and heartache, deeply relatable experiences that transcend barriers of language and culture. Figures bend, press, and sometimes break beyond the confines of their frames, reflecting the emotional intensity of moments that demand both fragility and resilience from us. In this way, the body appears at once vulnerable and powerful, embodying the contradiction of withstanding pressure while being pushed to the limit, Gomelskaya using this contrast of the emotional and physical to communicate something raw about the human experience.

Through a combination of oil painting and sculpture, Gomelskaya’s signature technique pushes both disciplines into fresh territory. The works extend outward into the viewer’s space, creating the sensation that the images are escaping their frames, emerging into the physical world. This crossing of boundaries creates an uncanny tension that captures the physical sensation of emotional overwhelm, a feeling sometimes referred to as 'wanting to crawl out of one’s own skin'. The result is a body of work that feels tangible and immediate, inviting viewers to recognise their own experiences within these suspended moments, each one a quiet, powerful articulation of what it means to feel deeply.

Tanya Gomelskaya, born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1988, emigrated to the United States at age five. Art became her refuge amidst the challenges of learning a new language and adjusting to a new culture. She earned a BFA from SUNY Purchase University but initially paused her artistic journey to work as a dental assistant. It wasn't until she moved to Jersey City, NY (USA) surrounded by a vibrant art community, that Gomelskaya reignited her passion for painting. Her art is a deep exploration of the human condition through surreal, hyperrealist painting combined with sculptural elements. Her meticulous technique, often involving brushes cut down to just a few hairs, invites viewers to engage with her work both closely and introspectively.
