Folk Horror is a group exhibition curated by Indigo Rawson-Smith. This show is an ode to the Folk Horror film genre, and a celebration of the old world lore, beliefs, characters and creatures which inspire it.

From 1973’s The Wickerman, to 2019’s Midsommar, Folk Horror has long drawn audiences to the silver screen.

As geographer Yi-Fu Tuan in his pioneering 1979 book Landscapes of Fear: “Awareness of preternatural evil, unique to the human species, enables a person to see and live in phantasmagorical worlds of witches, ghosts and monsters.”

Whether it be due to humanity’s gradual alienation from nature, or the lingering influence of religious puritanism on western morality, phantoms and unholy spectres continue to haunt the modern human subconscious when confronted with the rural, wild woodlands and valleys where isolation abounds.

But it’s not unknown to find oneself feeling kinship or sympathy for the perceived evils and antagonists in these works. The themes, folklore and practices that inform the genre have roots that go deep into human history, so maybe somewhere in the eerie beauty and archaic terror we see a small piece of the creatures we once were.

The artists included in this show were invited to explore the characters, themes and atmosphere that make Folk Horror the enduring genre that it is.

Indigo Rawson-Smith wears many hats, most notably as Gallery Manager for Beinart Gallery, Jeweller for her brand Indigo Nox Jewellery, and as a devoted mother to her giant puppy Sappho.
Having spent a few years working in galleries and art spaces around London she relocated to Melbourne to undertake full-time study in jewellery design, becoming a member of the Beinart Gallery crew in early 2021.
