Ching began the series looking far into the future, at a time when the impact of humans on the planet has ceased, creating a clear line in history distinguishing a new world. This new ecology, defined by flora and fauna in new stages of evolution, continues the never-ending exercise of life, resulting in new symbioses in altered environments. The endurance of the natural world on this perfect planet ensures that there will always be beauty, wonder, and balance.
Midway through making this series, Ching found himself taken out of daydreams of a new future without humans and forced to confront a present dominated by human issues. The novel coronavirus disrupted our entire species, making a different clear line in our history, delineating life before and life during COVID-19. Soon after the pandemic took hold, the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Amaud Arbery, the latest in a lineage of black Americans, ignited a shift not only in Ching’s society but across the world. A long overdue reckoning and unrest boiled over and demanded his focus.
Processing these massive shifts informed the second half of this series in a direct way. What started out as an exploration of life transitioning after the reign of humans ended as an exploration of human life transitioning in real time. Though these are two different perspectives from different vantage points, they both explore an emerging new world with themes of survival, adaptation and cooperation—the necessary elements of evolution and existing to witness the next moment.
Jon Ching, a self-taught painter, grew up steeped in natural beauty on the island of O’ahu, Hawai’i, which formed the foundation of his deep fascination with the natural world. Ching’s devoted art practice and detailed realism are inspired by the interconnectedness of nature. While dedicated to the minute idiosyncrasies of flora and fauna, Ching’s work is a surreal imagining of what limitless wonders and combinations nature can produce. New creatures and symbioses emerge in his meticulously rendered oil paintings, exemplifying the endless potential of life on Earth. His work is often driven by his desire to find balance between the human and natural worlds, exploring themes of symbiosis and searching for connections, physical and metaphorical, across nature’s kingdoms. Ching’s ultimate hope is to inspire love and admiration for the universally unique beauty and intrigue of our world.
