Biota, Kristen Egan’s newest series of sculptural masks, explores species that coexist within the same habitats, examining predator–prey relationships and the importance of ecological diversity.
Opening reception: Saturday, March 28th, 5 – 8 pm. This is a free event. As Beinart Gallery is a licensed venue, any minors attending the opening reception will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Biota brings together creatures that have evolved vastly different physiologies to occupy distinct niches within the same ecosystem; sometimes predator, sometimes prey, sometimes a pairing of both. The masks themselves are made from materials of the natural world: dried gourds, wood, paper clay, botanical and environmental elements that combine in Egan's hand-carved, folk-influenced style. The pieces teem with mystical detail, embellishments and surface textures that reflect the natural environment each work represents, coming together to echo a message central to Egan’s oeuvre: a reminder of the importance and sacredness of global biodiversity and our place within the natural world.
Kristen Egan is a mixed-media artist specialising in masks and sculptures. Her creative process embraces the organic shapes of natural materials, including gourds, antlers and tree branches. Using raw natural materials as a starting point, Egan builds by adding carved wood, paper clay and acrylic paints, often juxtaposing bright patterns and ornamentation against raw or weathered surface textures. Through her work, Egan has developed a personal mythos influenced by folk art, totemic imagery, astronomy and ecology. Her pantheon of recurring animal characters is frequently inspired by species native to her home state of Pennsylvania, USA.
