In Creeping Normality, hyperrealist painter Nicole Evans uses animals as avatars to explore how subtle, incremental shifts can normalise harm, reflecting on patterns of abuse in her past.

The collection’s title references the phenomenon of creeping normality—the gradual acceptance of negative, significant change as normal when it occurs slowly, through small and often barely perceptible shifts. Though the term is often used to describe broader social change, Evans also explores the concept more intimately through its recurrence in her own life.
Evans’s work has long advocated for environmental concerns, and while Creeping Normality is no departure, this series marks a more personal turn. In this body of work, Evans reflects on how the phenomenon of creeping normality has echoed patterns within harmful relationship dynamics in her past—where damaging behaviours can emerge gradually, becoming normalised through subtle and incremental shifts over time. The works explore the emotional toll of these experiences and the ways such dynamics shape one’s relationships, sense of self, and mental and physical wellbeing.
Evident throughout is Evans’s enduring love for animals and the natural world. Animals appear prominently within the works, acting as vessels for these personal explorations and allowing them to resonate with a wider audience—many of whom are navigating their own anxieties and uncertainties about the future as we collectively attempt to make sense of an ever-shifting Overton window.
Nicole Evans is an artist, illustrator, and muralist currently based in Melbourne, Australia. Her childhood in Tasmania fostered a profound reverence for nature, an influence reflected in her deeply evocative paintings. Evans holds a Master of Fine Art from RMIT and a Bachelor of Creative Arts from the University of Tasmania. She exhibits nationally and internationally and is represented by Beinart Gallery.
