Michael Campbell is a multidisciplinary artist whose work blends craft, spirituality, and the natural world to explore themes of death, transcendence, and connection. Raised in the Midwest during the 1970s, Campbell grew up immersed in the era’s handicraft revival—surrounded by macramé, decoupage, and homemade Sunday School projects. These early experiences fostered a lifelong association between handmade objects and the divine.
Today, Campbell’s practice centres on fungi as both symbol and subject. Fascinated by the mushroom’s dual role as a decomposer and entheogen, his sculptures and installations propose an alternative mythology—one rooted in nature, mysticism, and ecological interconnection....

Fascinated by the mushroom’s dual role as a decomposer and entheogen, his sculptures and installations propose an alternative mythology—one rooted in nature, mysticism, and ecological interconnection. His works often take the form of saintly relics or forest altars, inviting viewers into a contemplative space where the divine emerges from decay and regeneration. The artist states, "My work explores our connection to the mysterious fungi kingdom. I’m curious about death and what lies beyond. As decomposers of dead, organic matter, mushrooms are symbols of the imminent life and death process. They release enzymes to feed on dead, organic matter. It’s a fascinating juxtaposition; an organism that cleans and clears away dead matter and an entheogen that, when ingested, brings about transcendent states of consciousness".
Campbell reimagines spiritual iconography through a temporal lens, suggesting that divinity is not separate from the natural world, but deeply entwined within it.
