Sanctuary is a series of new paintings by Rachel Perrin. While deeply personal, they reflect a theme relatable for us all: the need for a place of peace within.

This exhibition will run from Jan 9th - Jan 23rd and will coincide with the group exhibition, Antipodes 2022.

Unfortunately, due to rapidly rising covid cases in our community and staff shortages within our team at Beinart Gallery, we are cancelling this Saturday’s opening reception.

We hope to have a closing reception to celebrate these exhibitions but will make more announcements in the coming weeks.

We will still be open during our regular trading hours and the exhibition will be open to the public from 10am, Sunday the 9th of January.

Perrin began thinking about the concept of a sanctuary during Melbourne’s first big lockdown of 2020. The repetitive business of daily life locked in a home environment had Perrin looking for those things which brought joy, and for Perrin, those things were her daughter and her garden.

She began painting, first her daughter’s face and then the flowers and foliage of her gardens; before long, the two began to become one and the same, and the line between human and nature became blurred. Perrin’s connection to nature and the freedom to move as she pleased within it as a basic human right became a primary focus.

The idea of a serene sanctuary as a tangible destination began to irritate Perrin as she realised that even the most beautiful of places can become stifling in one’s mind if one is unable to leave. The importance of the creation of a sanctuary within the mind which brings comfort under all circumstances provoked a shift in the work nearing the end of the series, and the pieces became noticeably gentler from Perrin’s perspective.

Perrin employed various techniques and approaches in these pieces. Some works began with drawings burned using a pyrography tool, followed by layering in of thin oil glazes, while other works were painted directly on raw timber boards. Some works began with the face, while others were bits and pieces of face and flower as Perrin enjoyed the push and pull of creating the desired balance between figure and foliage.

This is an introspective show, the creation of which was cathartic for the artist as she explored many themes of the self.

Rachel Perrin lives and works in Melbourne. She spent many years working in the fashion industry, which has influenced her approach to her art. Her work asks the question, ‘Is there an essence of someone that may be captured?’
