Hometown follows a teenage girl living in a peaceful neighbourhood who is shocked by the arrival of an oddly familiar stranger with a troubling message. Through word and image, Tan invites visitors to dive into a fascinating world of strange creatures, alien worlds and complicated human love.
Shaun Tan is an artist, writer, and filmmaker from Perth, Western Australia, the recipient of an Academy Award, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award and the Kate Greenaway Medal. He lives in Melbourne with his wife, two children and various plants, animals and machines.
Beinart Gallery also offers a wide range of Shaun Tan limited-edition prints, including new releases for this exhibition.
Praise for Hometown:
‘Loved it!! Chockfull of magic!!’ - Guillermo Del Toro
‘Some truths are so enormous, so beautiful, so elusive they can be told only through myth.’ - John Hendrix, New York Times
‘A passionate, clever and inspiring tale about how we choose which family to love.’ - Darren Aronofsky
‘Here is a cornucopia of a world to set beside the densely realised imaginings of Topor or Miyazaki - a many-splendored thing.’ - Dave McKean
‘I expect that you, like me, have been waiting impatiently for the chance to inhabit Shaun Tan’s next book—because you don’t just read a Shaun Tan book. You go into one, live there for as long as possible, and then, reluctantly step back out into your life.’ - Kelly Link
