Shrouds have a long history and are one of the most used articles in burial internationally. They have traditional significance to a number of religions and are highly customizable. (They are also the reason pop culture ‘ghosts’ are typically depicted as a white sheet!)

“Also known as winding cloth, wade, burial blanket, burial cloth, grave clothes or soft coffin, a shroud is simply a piece, or pieces of fabric used to wrap a person after death to cover, protect and provide dignity as they move through to burial or cremation.” - Ake Ake shrouds

“A shrouded cremation involves wrapping the body in a shroud for cremation, rather than placing it in a coffin. This option has been available in Australia since 2018, initially offered in Victoria and then in Tasmania. Today, families across many parts of Australia can choose a shrouded cremation, giving them the option to forgo purchasing a coffin when opting for cremation.” - NDAN

Choices of fabrics, colours and personalisation as well as reduced costs and environmental factors are bringing the shroud forward in contemporary western culture. Detailed information pertaining to fabrics/textiles, their environmental impact and rates of decay can be found in the work of Dr Pia Interlandi
