A charcoal tonal study for the 2023 oil painting Sheherazade. Here, the heroine of the 1001 Arabian Nights, Sheherazade, waits at the door of the Sultan Shahyar, who every night takes a new virgin only to have her killed the following morning. The head of the mad Sultan’s previous victim lies in the basket amid the chickens. Sheherazade, using her knowledge and smarts, outwits the sultan and ultimately reforms the monarch. - Sean Layh
