Roos van der Vliet - Allegory of the Moon
Allegory of the Moon is the latest collection of paintings by Roos van der Vliet. In these works, van der Vliet allowed herself to be influenced by the romantic movement of the 19th century in general and by a poem by Sylvia Plath, ‘The Moon and the Yew Tree’ (1961), in particular.

Allegory of the Moon is the latest collection of paintings by Roos van der Vliet. In these works, van der Vliet allowed herself to be influenced by the romantic movement of the 19th century in general and by a poem by Sylvia Plath, ‘The Moon and the Yew Tree’ (1961), in particular.
After reading ‘The Moon and the Yew Tree’ last year, van der Vliet recognized something in herself that she hadn’t known was there, and she couldn’t let it go afterwards. She felt the urge to dive deep into the poetic, romantic, timeless part of herself that’s unaware of the current time and space, unaware of the art world, society, the superficiality of social media, followers and trends.
Opening reception: Saturday, December 3rd, 6 - 9pm.
This exhibition will run from December 4th - December 23rd and will coincide with Victor Castillo's The Stolen Muse, Robyn Rich's Optics, Marina Dieul's Le Jeu du Chat et de la Souris & Raúl Guerra's HOPE.
The need to draw back from the overwhelm of the world has always been for van der Vliet a motive to create art; at the same time, it felt like she was too rooted in that superficial world. She felt the need to step out of it for a while. She worked for months in her studio, and no one was allowed to enter: neither her partner nor her friends saw the series until it was finished.
The paintings in Allegory of the Moon show a young woman in a vast postapocalyptic landscape. She seeks refuge in herself but not because she is a fragile victim of her surroundings. She symbolizes the moon, and like the moon, she is unfazed by our imposed symbolism. The shelter she seeks is within herself, an elusive and feminine power.
Roos van der Vliet is a Dutch artist based in Arnhem, the Netherlands. She earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in 2009. While she does not consider herself a hyperrealist, it is important to her that her work feels real; she is so attuned to the process that it is almost as if making the work real makes her real. van der Vliet’s work has been shown throughout Europe and the United States.
