MM..FOOD is a new collection of paintings by Josh Juett. It represents an attempt to present introspective themes in such a way that they are able to be seen as light musings rather than scathing criticisms.

Opening reception: Saturday, March 4th, 6 - 9pm.

This exhibition will run from March 5th - March 26th and will coincide with Abigail Goldman's Small Improvements, Jason Limon's Perplexed and Beau White's Taste of Victory.

This exhibition will run from March 5th - March 26th and will coincide with Abigail Goldman's Small Improvements, Jason Limon's Perplexed and Beau White's Taste of Victory.

Juett notes that everyone has their own unique relationship with food. Food is sustenance and can be a source of great joy, but for some people it brings shame and mistrust. For Juett, food is a consistent source of self-ridicule: it has a great impact on how he feels about himself on a day-to-day basis. Every day we are faced with the temptation of eating foods that we are trying to avoid, and it is an uphill battle to make the right choices to maintain a sense of well-being. Often a series of excuses will follow the choice to consume something which one was consciously trying to avoid.

To think deeply about one’s relationship with food is to reflect on how well one cares for oneself. MM..FOOD had its beginnings in a light-hearted and fun ideology, but the more Juett reflected on his relationship with food, the more he realised how negative the outlook actually was.

Inspired by the unconventional lyrics and instrumentals of the MF DOOM album of the same name, MM..FOOD has an important place in Juett’s heart. MM..FOOD was the album Juett was obsessed with during the time of his first debut solo show, and the songs remind him of a very exciting time in his life. His own work continues the themes in the wider context of his practice, where obscure symbolism represents personal revelations within his life. This particular show is seen through the lens of the MF DOOM album, with a fun and quirky food aesthetic as well as a sense of strange composition and intrigue.

Josh Juett is from Adelaide, Australia. He brings pop culture references into pieces that have a more classical tone, creating work that is fun and interesting.
