Nicole Evans - Smoke Signals
Smoke Signals is a collection of new paintings by Nicole Evans. This series was inspired by her reading about animals evolving in real time in response to the changing environment and their habitats.
Opening reception: Saturday, September 10th, 6 - 9pm.

Evans’s underlying focus is on the issues of climate change and environmental degradation. The animals featured in her paintings are literal and metaphorical representations of the environmental issues that affect not only animals but humans as well. The wildlife depicted also have a slightly anthropomorphic feel. This is a deliberate choice by the artist; the animals are symbols of Evans’ own emotions and struggles.
Evans draws a lot of inspiration from real examples of animals interacting in unusual ways with other species or in unexpected environments (for better or worse). These interactions are often a result of forced displacement/migration due to habitat loss, harking back to the common theme of her work. Imaginings of existing endangered species morphed into prehistoric-like, enormous versions of themselves are the main focus in Smoke Signals. The phrases ‘canary in the coal mine’ and ‘elephant in the room’ were stuck in the back of Evans’s mind whilst making this series of work. The oversized animals featured in her paintings aim to allude to these phrases; she imagines these creatures as harbingers of danger or that something is not quite right.
Nicole Evans grew up in Tasmania and is currently based in Melbourne, working as a muralist, painter and illustrator. She earned her master of fine art degree in 2015 from RMIT in Melbourne. Her work is exhibited nationally and internationally, and she accepts both private and public commissions.
