Natural Sovereignty is the latest series of paintings by Steven Kenny. These works provide an opportunity for the viewer to consider the inherent worth of animals and our relationship with them.

Before humans appeared on the scene, Earth’s flora and fauna existed in a self-governing state. The concept of hierarchies is a manmade construction. In nature, living things operate according to their own instinctive rules. These inborn, hard-wired instruction books guide each species along life paths that best suit their needs and, in doing so, weave a highly complex symbiotic fabric.

The paintings Kenny created for Natural Sovereignty are divided into two groups: Royal Animals and Flying Babies. The Royal Animals are just that: each is portrayed wearing a unique crown made from gilt twigs and pearls. They display their innate status and invite the reverence they deserve. The Flying Babies are examples of human-animal interdependence and mutual joy. Each baby’s innocent presence is undemanding and the birds willingly carry the children, offering lessons in weightlessness and freedom.

Steven Kenny was born in Peekskill, New York, in 1962. He earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1984. During his final year of art school he studied independently in Rome; he credits this time and the exposure to European art for having a deep impact on his painting style.

He spent several years in New York City, where he worked as a freelance commercial illustrator for clients such as Microsoft, AT&T, Time magazine, and Sony Music, among others.

Eventually Kenny decided to turn his attention to fine art on a full-time basis. He currently lives in the state of Virginia in the United States. His award-winning paintings are exhibited in galleries across the United States and Europe. His paintings are included in the permanent collections of the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art, Polk Museum of Art, State College of Florida and Museo Arte Contemporanea Sicilia as well as many private collections around the world. Kenny employs Old Master oil painting techniques to create images that are reminiscent of the Renaissance and Northern Baroque periods but still firmly in the realm of Contemporary Art.
