Symbiosis is an ambitious group exhibition curated by Luke Barrett, exclusively featuring artists who are in close personal relationships with one another, while at the same time being some of the art world's most well-known and popular new-contemporary artists.

Opening reception: Saturday, November 5th, 6 - 9pm.

This exhibition will run from November 6th - November 27th and will coincide with Stephanie Kilgast's Knowledge?, Alvaro Naddeo's (igno)RANT and Steven Kenny's Natural Sovereignty.

This exhibition will run from November 6th - November 27th and will coincide with Stephanie Kilgast's Knowledge?, Alvaro Naddeo's (igno)RANT and Steven Kenny's Natural Sovereignty.

Luke's ambition for this exhibition is to engage the audience in a way which other exhibitions do not: for each visitor to think about each art work more deeply and more laterally than if they simply walked-through the exhibition. Every participating artist is in a personal or family relationship with at least one of the other participating artists. This exhibition will be more than the sum of its parts – we won’t just be displaying stand-alone pieces, each human relationship will be on display, as will the contrasts, complementarities and influences across artistic styles and relationships.

The concept underpinning this exhibition has come with challenges which make the occasion all the more special and difficult to repeat. For professional artists, there can be a natural tendency for bios and other publicly available information to focus solely on their art and practice, with less attention afforded to personal relationships which are completely and deliberately de-emphasised.

With this exhibition, Luke intends to proudly acknowledge the human relationships which exist beyond the canvas. The works of each artist will be displayed side-by-side with the work of their partner or relative, unlocking the joy and fascination that comes with illuminating and exploring the personal connections between some of the world's favourite artists.

Visitors to the gallery will naturally be drawn towards appreciating each piece, not just in its own right but also in a deeper, more considered and comparative way in the light of their partner’s companion piece which will be exhibited by its side.

Luke Barrett is a Melbourne-based art collector with a keen interest in writing poetry, photography, philosophy, cosmology, tiki and sub-cultures. Luke is a writer for the print edition of Beautiful Bizarre Magazine and has interviewed many of the world’s leading new contemporary and pop surreal artists, uncovering the unknown intimate relationships which recur throughout the art world in the process.
