Pain has been a subject of Rayne’s art since her early teen years, when she was fascinated by blood, death and rituals such as body piercing, scarification and hook suspensions. Rayne was drawn to these art forms by the raw beauty and potential for transcendent experience; as an adult, this led to an interest in BDSM and kink, and a deep love for rope bondage. After suffering for years with chronic pain from endometriosis, often being in so much agony that even the slightest pressure on her abdomen is torture, being able to take back her autonomy and feel pain on her own terms has become a transformational and incredibly liberating practice for Rayne. Ritualizing her pain, which goes hand in hand with her sexuality given her experience with endometriosis, has given her the ability to move beyond herself and into otherness: to be made aware of the permanence yet fleetingness of her suffering, especially when observing the plight of the natural world.
As a highly sensitive, neurodivergent person, Rayne has always found the more-than-human world a place of belonging and connection. As a lover of touch, Rayne finds that this need for connection extends beyond the human and into the earth itself, fully erotically embedded into the ecosystem. It is a primal, sensual, hedonistic yearning to be caressed and consumed by the natural world.
Zoë Rayne is an oil painter living and painting in Wurundjeri country, in the Dandenong Ranges of Victoria. She graduated from the National Art School, Sydney, in 2015 with a bachelor of fine art degree in painting. With a deep connection to the more-than-human world, Rayne has always felt called to depict humanity’s inherent inseparability from nature. A painter of the liminal, Rayne strives to portray a sense of mystery and the otherworldly in her work. Her paintings are a reclamation of old ways found in myth, story and folklore, intertwined with her own explorations of queerness, ritual, kink and eco-sexuality.
