Aves ex Machina extends Lix North’s Bellwether series. Delicate canary protagonists equipped with Verne-esque respirators meet desolate, post-human terrains. This new work probes human exceptionalism and its blind spots: how the lives we treat as ‘lesser’ become our first witnesses, and sometimes our last custodians.
Rather than cataloguing ecological or social collapse, these works explore the quiet courage that surfaces at its periphery. Whether mechanically augmented human outliers or small birds in elaborate apparatus, these figures stand sentinel at calamity’s edge. They embody the paradox that those with the least to give often sacrifice the most.
Visually and conceptually, there’s a tension between the baroque and the barren that North loves. Fragile, feathered bodies in promethean engineering set amidst wasteland, the persistence of a singular life against the monumental scale of ecological failure.
Historically, millions of canaries were sacrificed to warn miners of invisible dangers until 1986. They have long been North's primary avatar, a consequence of feeling a deeper kinship with the non-human world. Here, they return not as instruments but as protagonists: a small, vigilant presence guiding us through the diaphanous remains of our myopic dreams.

Lix North is a New Zealand-born artist and a graduate of NMIT’s School of Visual Arts. North cites a childhood in the stunning isolation of hill country as the catalyst for her unique way of seeing the world and penchant for introspective self-portraiture. Developing a profound affinity for Brisbane, Australia in the mid 2000s, she settled there in 2007, spending the majority of the ensuing decade as a professional illustrator, photographer and commission artist under the name of her graphic art studio, Lix Creative.
Since returning her focus to conceptual fine art and exhibition in 2016, Lix has taken home the Art Lovers Australia Prize, Clayton Utz Art Award People’s Choice, a Lethbridge 10,000 Category Award and finalist positions in the Portia Geach Memorial Award and Beautiful Bizarre Magazine Art Prize.
