Tokyo Jesus' practice is also shaped by his history of feeling like an outsider—a belief that took root in childhood and never fully faded. As a boy, he found solace in the story of Frankenstein’s monster, a lonely creature rejected for its otherness, but who still longed for connection. That early identification became the foundation of his enduring fascination with the otherworldly, and the sculptures and drawings in this exhibition reflect that emotional history. Through spectral figures and the children who accompany them, Tokyo Jesus offers quiet hope and gentle recognition to anyone who has ever felt othered or unseen.

Using vintage fabrics and discarded objects, Tokyo Jesus constructs figures that feel both ancient and unfamiliar. The implied history of these materials is important to the artist, who believes they are imbued with their own stories and silent memories. When fused with traditional Japanese doll-making techniques, they become what he calls 'timeless artifacts'. Frayed edges, faded patterns and mended garments hint at the passage of time and hardships endured by these creatures, at stories of survival.

These supernatural forms suggest a world where humanity has lost its dominance, mutating into something much eerier, or perhaps fading into a shadow realm that runs alongside our own, unseen. Whatever the case, these 'living relics' are all that remain, vessels for forgotten souls, guardians of memories, and silent witnesses to transformation. Eternal Memories proposes that even in despair, something tender endures, a true embodiment of Cesar A. Cruz's declaration that “art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.”

Tokyo Jesus is a Japanese mixed-media artist celebrated for his intricately crafted dolls, resin art toys, and emotionally resonant drawings. Since 2009, he has exhibited extensively across Japan, the United States, Australia, and Europe, with his works cultivating a base of dedicated collectors. He is a two-time Designer Toy Awards honoree, receiving the “Best Mini Series” award in 2018 and a finalist nod for “Best Resin” in 2020.
